The pleasures of baseball photography

When I started this blog several years ago, it was period in my career when I was deep into administrative work and sought a creative outlet to keep my writing skills sharp.

That still rings true, but in recent years I’ve grown more and more excited about photography. While writing is what centers my creative soul, photography is an unbridled pleasure.

Taking photos of my family has always been a close second to loving my family itself, a compulsion or passion I inherited from my father. On the job, writing and editing have been the pillars of my professional work.

While writing a news or feature story is where I’ve mainly made my living, the times when I’ve had photos published have always given me exceptional joy.

Today, I’m wandering with my camera most days, taking photos of birds and other wildlife that I feature on my birding blog. But I also relish the opportunities I have to stride the sidelines of Princeton Uniiversity baseball games and shoot the game action of the Tigers and their opponents.

This weekend, I was at the first and third games of the series the team played against Cornell. Herewith are some of my favorite shots from the first and third games. I missed the second game of the Friday doubleheader because of work commitments.

With a whip-like motion, sidearm reliever Jacob Faulkner pitches in relief in the Friday game, which Princeton won 4-3 in 10 innings.
Shortstop Nick DiPietrantonio gets some air in throwing out a runner.
Caden Shapiro celebrates his walk-off walk to give Princeton a 4-3 victory over Cornell on Friday.
Jason Ramirez pitches in relief Sunday. If you look closely, you can see the Ivy League logo on the ball.
Matt Scannell drops his bat on his way toward first base early in Sunday’s game.
Celebrating another run, Cornell was well on its way Sunday to a 15-2 victory to salvage a split of the series.

  1. Fantastic photos. Great work Dan! I’m no good with photography, but I sure love seeing when a photographer captures a moment and you did that, baseball card in action photos.
