Fantasy baseball tears me in two directions. On the one hand, I love the concept of creating my own team to see what might happen if I were picking the lineups. On the other hand, pulling apart the game at the seams and stitching into something else should never eclipse the real thing.
So I have a modest, rather than fanatic, interest in fantasy play. Over the past few years I’ve consistently fielded one team in a league with some former work colleagues. It’s a weekly head-to-head league, strictly for fun. For a couple seasons running I also entered a team in Yahoo daily leagues.
I’m going with just one team this year, and our group has switched over to ESPN’s fantasy system. I won’t bore you with the details of my team, but get a load of this starting rotation: Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers, Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner of the Giants, C.J. Wilson of the Rangers and Edinson Volquez of the Reds.
Showing my usual knack for picking losers, I had the Pirates-Game on in the background as our draft was unfolding today. No sooner had I chosen Carlos Marmol as my closer than he blew a save and lost to the Pirates.
So much for picking somebody from the Cubs!

I have the same mixed feelings about fantasy baseball as you. Every year I tell myself I should try to spend a year without being involved in fantasy baseball. But every year (since ’93) I’ve entered at least one league. This year, I’m in two.
BTW, I have Kershaw, too. So let’s hope he has a great year.
