Following the Princeton baseball team for the past 10 years, I figured that someday one of the players I knew would make it to the majors. That day came Sunday when the San Francisco Giants called up Scott Bandura from AAA Sacramento.
As the designated hitter, Scott went 1-for-3 with a walk. He struck out twice and singled, taking second on an error when the shortstop’s throw went wide as he beat it to the bag. A few batters later, he scored his first big-league run.
I was thrilled to hear that Scott made it to the Giants, just three years after they drafted him in the 7th round. Scott started the season at AA Richmond. With a hot bat, he moved up to the River Cats, again hitting well.
Scott was a terrific player at Princeton, and I am mystified as to why I can only find this single shot of him in a Tigers uniform in my iPhone files.
In all the games I’ve photographed the team, I often wonder while looking through the viewfinder if this player or that will make it to the big leagues. Scott was a good bet.
As happy as I was with news of his call-up, I was even happier this morning when I saw that several of Scott’s Princeton teammates were at Oracle Park to watch his debut game.
I didn’t think I could cheer any harder for the Giants. With Scott Bandura wearing the orange and black (as he did at Princeton), I’ll take it up a notch. 🧢
