The Philadelphia Phillies fired Rob Thomson as manager today, an inevitable outcome after the Phils got off to a terrible start to the 2026 season. Never mind that Thompson guided the Fightin’ Phils to winning records under his tutelage for the four previous seasons.
An ugly 9-11 start doomed Thomson, who I hope gets another chance to manage in the big leagues if he’d like to do so.
As for the Phils, I haven’t paid rapt attention to them this season. I suppose I’ll get back on the bandwagon if they start winning under interim manager Don Mattingly.
Good luck, Donny Baseball. ๐งข
Frankly, it was expected. Remember, he was going to retire in 2022, but he decided to come back. When they brought Mattingly on, I expected the reason would be that if Topper left (by his own admission or not, like now), Donny Baseball would take over. Of course, this bad start is all on the players and not Rob. Perhaps, like when the Phillies fired Girardi and Topper came in, they can reel off a similar 8 game winning streak. In any case…these high-priced aging veterans need to play better. No matter who is on the bench.
