The soothing sounds of Spring Training

I spent the previous two days watching the snow fall and a few hours shoveling during and after the Nor’easter storm that blanketed much of the Northeast. Post-shoveling, through the MLB app on my iPhone I was able to catch some of the glorious sounds of opening weekend for Spring Training.

Actually, I heard a chunk of the first Phillies game on my car radio on Saturday while running a pre-storm errand. It was a pleasure to hear again on Philadelphia’s WIP-FM the voices of Scott Franzke and Kevin Stocker from Florida. The Fightin’ Phils lost to the Blue Jays, but that wasn’t the point: baseball was back!

I caught a bit of the Phillies game again on Sunday, then switched to the San Francisco Giants Cactus League game in Arizona. Jon Miller and Duane Kuiper were on the microphones for KNBR, and it was grand. I even got to hear some Bay Area commercials, which reminded me of my Northern California years.

On Monday — a snow day for work and most schools across the Northeast — I missed the Phillies game but managed to catch the final inning and a half of the Guardians game in Arizona, Tom Hamilton with the call.

Hearing long-tenured announcers and the crack of the bat helped take much of the chill out of the air. I’m looking forward to the start of the regular season just about a month away. Play ball! 🧢

I swiped the snow off the Giants logo on my license plate frame as I began what turned out to be four hours of shoveling on Sunday.

  1. I was happy to hear…and see…them back as well! I’ve been checking out all the cool spring training portraits on IG, too. Might have to some fun ones with my son’s team again.

  2. i love that license plate….do you see many in the new jersey new york area? plates with a san francisco giants top? i would think there are plenty of giants fans in new york or maybe not….I always forget how long ago it was that they moved. i guess i’m getting old.

  3. I can’t ever recall seeing a San Francisco Giants logo out this way, let alone on a license plate frame. New Jersey offers Notre Dame, Yankees and (I think) Phillies vanity plates.
