Hot summer for Princeton baseball: Four players go pro

What a summer it has been for the Princeton University baseball team. The Tigers posted a 12-31 record during the season for a .279 winning percentage. But the percentage of players turning professional is much, much higher.

Pitcher Sean Episcope, who spent most of the season injured, was selected in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

That was followed quickly by catcher Jake Bold signing a contract with the San Diego Padres. Next, outfielder Matt Scannell (in top photo), who played this year at Wake Forest by using a COVID-created extra year of eligibility, signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.

With bat cocked, Jake Bold looks toward the pitcher.

Those moves all happened in July, and today, two days into August, outfielder Caden Shapiro signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

That’s a dazzling number of players heading into professional careers for any college or university. I’m filled with joy for these young men, who in their Princeton years managed challenging course loads in addition to the demands of NCAA Division I athletics.

In recognition of these signings, I had my Brewers cap on earlier this week. Today I’m wearing a Blue Jays shirt. Tomorrow, I’ll don my Pirates cap, and when I get to the office Monday, I’ll put my Padres baseball on display.

Hats off to Sean, Jake, Matt and Caden, and go Tigers (and Brewers, Pads, Jays and Buccos)! 🧢

[Editor’s note: sorry, I don’t have a photo of Sean Episcope in action.]

  1. Nice Dan! Great photos, as usual. I would love to check out a university game one day. I’m gonna try and remember these draftees and see how their careers go.
