Weather cold, bats hot at Princeton-Rider baseball game

Most years that I can recall, Princeton plays a mid-week, non-conference game against Rider University. The Broncs play at Sonny Pitaro Field on the campus in Lawrence Township, roughly 8 miles from Princeton’s campus.

On Wednesday, I had a late meeting at work but was able to drive to the Rider campus in time to catch the last three innings of the game. I got to watch the Tigers score 11 runs in those innings, wrapping up a 20-8 victory.

The teams had 25 hits and 25 walks between them on a sunny but cold afternoon that brought out the long sleeves and neck gaiters. I believe the teperature was around 40 degrees, and it was windy. The Princeton coaches and players on the bench were wearing parkas. I spent a bit of time along the first base line, then moved over to third, my hands jammed in my jacket pockets when I wasn’t firing my camera.

One twist to this year’s game was that Barry Davis, who coached Rider to great success from 2004 to 2024, joined the Princeton coaching staff this season.

I plan to be at Bill Clarke field at Princeton this weekend when the Tigers resume Ivy League play against Brown. 🧒

  1. I had this game on my calendar to get to, but something came up with my kids. Bummer! Wanted to catch you in action! Great banner photo here.
