As the Philadelphia Eagles head to another Super Bowl, The Associated Press took that as a cue to write more broadly about how eagles — Philadelphia and bald — are “having a moment.”
The football team’s good fortune is widely l known, and there’s also been a lot of good news lately about our national bird, the bald eagle. The species, recovering from near-extinction troubles triggered by DDT, has come off endangered lists in New Jersey and elsewhere.
AP reporter Mike Catalini contacted me for comment from a birder’s perspective, and I am pleased to report that I’m quoted in the story. I also state my allegiance to the Philadelphia squad competing in New Orleans on Sunday.
You can read my fuller take on the matter on my birding blog.
Or you can stick with this short summary of what I said: “Go birds!” 🧢
That’s fantastic Dan that your birding knowledge is appreciated. Glad to hear the bald eagle is off the extinction list. I’ve never seen one before. A lot of hawks, but never a bald eagle.
Your time will come!
One thing’s for sure – I’m going to make a conscious effort to look up and all around when waling, especially while up on the small mountain here, Mount Royal.
