Two Princeton ballplayers drafted BY San Francisco Giants

The Major League Baseball Draft isn’t hyped like the NFL and NBA drafts, the televised spectacles where those expecting to be drafted appear on national TV in thousand-dollar suits in anticipation of million-dollar contracts.

No, the baseball draft is a lower-key affair, devoid of the immediate fawning talking-head commentary that oozes from the football and basketball broadcasts. Baseball players take longer to develop, typically 2-5 years or seasoning in the minor leagues. I’ll be keeping tabs the next few years on two Princeton University players I’ve gotten to know a bit. They are Scott Bandura and Nadir Lewis, two nice young men blessed with speed and power whom the San Francisco Giants drafted this year. I’m thrilled that they were chosen by the Giants, one of the best organizations in the game. I look forward to the days when they set foot on the big green expanse of the outfield at Oracle Park, where I hope their destiny is to rip many line-drive doubles and triples and a few splash homers into McCovey Cove, the more against the Dodgers, the better.

It was a pleasure to watch Scott and Nadir play in the orange and black of Princeton, and I look forward to seeing them wearing the orange and black of the Giants.

  1. It looks like the baseball draft is more of a big deal than it used to be, but, as you say Dan, it’s way less of a big deal than the other major sport drafts. I love seeing players drafted in the later rounds eventually making it to the MLB. I recently received an email from a baseball friend who pointed out that Gabe Kapler, current manager of the Giants, was drafted in the 57th round! I hope your Princeton guys make it to the show!
