The Cleveland baseball franchise has played its last game as the Indians, and they went out with a victory over the Texas Rangers. I’ve been preparing mentally for the transition to the new name, which I embrace.
Feelings over the dispatching of Chief Wahoo and the Indians name remain raw among Cleveland fans, and probably will for several years. Individual fans can make up their own mind; I’m not going to try to sway anyone one way or the other.
Over time, I’m betting the good people of northeast Ohio and all those who follow the erstwhile Tribe will come around, a process that no doubt will pass more quickly should the team regain its form as a consistent winner.
In the Lofton-Thome-Vizquel glory years of the mid-90s, the Indians packed the house night after night. That can happen again, and I fervently hope it will. I’m waiting for that lifetime dream of a World Champions parade on Euclid Avenue and around Public Square to come true. May the Guardians deliver it.

There’s a team in Taiwan called the Fubon Guardians, (it’s a legit league–Manny Ramirez played there in 2013) so I guess it isn’t all that weird. Spiders would have been sweet though.
Wow. I didn’t know that. I’d have been very happy with Spiders. We had a San Francisco Spiders minor league hockey team in San Francisco for a few years in the ’90s, and it was great for marketing. But evidently not so much that the team stuck around.
i thought they woulda done something with the rock and roll hall of fame in mind like they do in nashville with the AAA Brewers being the Nashville Sounds.
