Princeton baseball is back home

Princeton and other college baseball teams in the Northeast typically start their seasons on long road trips down South, where the weather is warmer and a bit more predictable than it is on campus.

That was the case again for Princeton, and I had to wait until this weekend for their home opener series and the start of Ivy League play. I took in the Dartmouth-Princeton series at Bill Clarke Field, and the Tigers prevailed in each of the three games.

Saturday was a doubleheader, and the second game went into extra innings and lasted so long that the game was suspended by darkness and picked up again this morning. The finale was played after that.

This was my first chance to use my Canon R-7 mirrorless camera for baseball, and I’m pleased with the results. I used my Canon 75-300 zoom for a few innings Saturday but otherwise stuck with my Sigma 150-600 Contemporary zoom, which I use for birding and wildlife photography.

For the first time in a couple of years, I brought my monopod with me. The stick did a great job saving me from holding that heavy lens, which I was able to swing around or dip quickly whenever needed.

Here’s a gallery of some of my favorite shots from the three games, not to mention the one topping this post of Princeton pitcher Justin Kim in action today.
